Peiffer Wolf Investigates CalSTRS Data Breach

Peiffer Wolf is investigating claims on behalf of victims of a data breach involving data entrusted to the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (“CalSTRS”)

Based in West Sacramento, CA, CalSTRS provides retirement, disability, and survivor benefits for California’s 965,000 prekindergarten through community college educators and their families. If you received a notice of data breach letter from CalSTRS, please contact us as soon as possible to understand your legal rights in response to the data breach.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On June 4, 2023, PBI, a third-party vendor that provides services to pension funds on confirming participants’ deaths to ensure proper payments and prevent overpayments, initially informed CalSTRS that its systems were involved in a “mass exploit of a vulnerability” in a secure file transfer system. On June 8, PBI confirmed that the incident involved files containing the personal information of some CalSTRS participants and beneficiaries. Personal information that was downloaded included: names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, and ZIP codes of some 415,000 CalSTRS participants and beneficiaries.

According to the report from Pensions and Investments, the information that could have been subject to unauthorized access includes names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, and ZIP codes.
