Children’s Hospital LA Sued by Family of 7-Year-Old Cancer Patient

Children’s Hospital LA | KNX 1070 | August 19, 2020

“Children’s Hospital LA is being sued by the family of a seven-year-old cancer patient whose stem cells were lost along with those of 55 other patients when a freezer failed.

Linda Wratten says it only got worse when she found out about the loss of her son’s stem cells, which had been harvested through a long and painful process and could’ve helped his body recover from aggressive cancer treatment.

“It’s a parent’s worst nightmare,” she said. “As of September when we found out that CHLA destroyed my son’s stem cells it amplified my anxiety and my fear tenfold.”

The Wrattens’ attorney alleges the hospital kept using the freezer long past its 10-year lifespan and an alarm system was “intentionally” disabled.

In a statement, the hospital says the freezer that malfunctioned has been replaced and “every effort [has been made> to ensure freezer reliability, security, and safety.”

Children’s has apologized to the families for the losses and is offering them free blood stem cell recollection.
