Pet Food Salmonella Recall | What Happened

According to the FDA, Mid America Pet Food initially announced a voluntary recall of some of its pet products on October 30, 2023. Then, on November 9, the company expanded its recall to “include additional pet food products, with Best By Dates before 10/31/24, made at its Mount Pleasant facility, due to the products’ potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.”

As pets can get sick and pass along infection to their human companions, contaminated pet foods pose a significant public health risk.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products, and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Salmonella Infection | Symptoms

Salmonella is a bacterium that can lead to serious illness and death in humans and animals that become infected. Those who are at higher risk are children under the age of 5, infants who are bottle-fed and not breast fed, people with weakened immune systems, and those taking certain medicines that reduce the body’s natural defenses against infection.

“Most people with Salmonella infection have diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Symptoms usually begin six hours to six days after infection and last four to seven days… Salmonella strains sometimes cause infection in urine, blood, bones, joints, or the nervous system (spinal fluid and brain), and can cause severe disease.” [ CDC ]
